The 1st phase of works at the Old Rectory involves the conversion an existing barn opposite the main house to provide a study and place of repose away from the house.
The design concept is to treat the conversion as if it were a building within a building. A timber structure built within the existing brick shell provides depth for insulation and services, and is lined out in cherry panels. This structure projects from two existing openings in the shell to create window bays that provide generous spaces for sitting. The end walls of the main space provide shelving and storage space, leaving the centre of the room free. The building is heated by a wood-burning stove, while a combination of cross ventilation and dispelling warm air through high-level rooflights keeps it cool in the summer.
This project was achieved under permitted development rights due to its proximity to the main house, and to the nature of the changes.

Edward McCann Architecture and Design is a young London-based practice that believes good design should be both simple in its solutions and transformative in its outcomes.
We maintain that architecture is driven by artistry as well as accuracy. Through an approach that encompasses client collaboration, intelligent problem-solving and innovative thinking, our work relates the context of a site to creative design strategies. We are uncompromising in our ambition to deliver spaces that meet and surpass client expectations.
With extensive experience across residential renovations, new builds and commercial commissions, we are imaginative as well as pragmatic. We work with varied aesthetics and explore a range of design possibilities in order to tap into a project’s potential, maximise space and draw in the light.
We provide full architectural services from establishing an initial brief in accordance with your budget, developing the design and securing all necessary approvals to being your lead consultant during the construction phase. Our preliminary meetings will investigate your aspirations to determine the scope of services required. We seek to add value to your project by pushing the parameters of what can be achieved.
